Federal Minister for Energy Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has written a letter to all provincial chief ministers, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) prime minister and the federal ministers for planning and science and technology in which he has urged them to implement the Energy Conservation Building Codes, 2023, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.
In his letter, the federal minister has stressed the need for implementing the building codes not only in the interest of the government but also of the people.
He has drawn the recipients’ attention towards the fact that excessive use of electricity and gas leads to inflated bills.
Leghari has also proposed a two-point strategy for the implementation of these codes.
He has called for the reframing of the rules concerning the existing buildings in light of these codes.
Similarly, the minister has called for giving priority to these codes in the public sector’s annual development plan.
Leghari has drawn the attention of the recipients towards the fact that the federal cabinet and the National Economic Council have already approved these codes.
The minister has informed that the Power Division has taken several steps for a reduction in the electricity bills and that the implementation of the codes is a step in the same direction.
“If energy is conserved at government buildings, then not only electricity bills will be reduced but the demand for electricity during peak hours in the summer season will also come down,” he has added.
Similarly, Leghari goes on to say, Sui Gas can be preserved in winters so that it could be used for other purposes.
The minister says that there are 60-80 peak hours during the summer season. “But for that, power plants are kept functional for years due to which electricity bills skyrocket.”
