Five ‘cyber criminals’ held in Karachi with women’s videos

The Cybercrimes Circle of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested five suspected cyber criminals in raids in different areas in Karachi on Tuesday.

The accused used to make women’s videos and then blackmail them. Police seized cell phones of the suspects and retrieved videos from them. Those arrested were identified as Zeeshan, Rizwan, Zain, Abdul and his brother Umair.

According to a report based on FIA’s data and published last year, 90 percent of cybercrime victims in Pakistan were women/minor girls and seventy percent of the cases involved pornographic content.

Another report published almost a year ago says around 72 cent of women in Pakistan have no awareness about cybercrime laws dealing with harassment on the internet. The report says that social media landscape is dominated by men in Pakistan. On Facebook, there are 77 percent men compared to 23 percent women. Also, of 5.2 million people on Instagram, 69 percent are men and 31 percent women.
