Renowned playwright and director Dr Ajmal has issued a bold challenge to critics who, according to him, are tarnishing the reputation of theatre.
“Don't dismiss theatre without understanding its essence,” he said in a candid conversation, calling upon critics to watch a play at the theatre and witness the dedication and hard work of the artists before forming any opinion.
“First watch a play, then criticise. We will welcome the criticism. Don't engage in criticism for criticism.”
He emphasised that theatre artists and the teams behind the scenes pour their heart and soul into entertaining the audience, and unfounded negativity inflicts serious damage on the art form.
Dr Ajmal called on educated people, media personnel, and critics to move beyond hearsay and preconceived notions.
“I have been associated with theatre for over 30 years, yet I haven’t seen any of these critics attending a single play. “How can they malign something they haven’t experienced?” he questioned.
He highlighted how the criticism affects the theatre, the artists and their families.
“The people associated with theatre are not aliens. They are respectable people with families. When respectable people start attending the theatre, it will regain its lost glory and become a source of cultural enrichment for all.”
Dr Ajmal urged for a collaborative effort to revive the theatre’s past splendour.
He called for proper policymaking to support the art form and stressed the importance of involving senior artists in monitoring and advisory roles.
“The expertise and experience of senior artists can bring immense value to theatre. Instead of politicising the art world, policymakers and politicians should focus on drafting legislation that uplifts the theatre,” he suggested.
Dr Ajmal said, “Theatre has the potential to disseminate positive values and bring families together. Don’t judge based on hearsay. Come to the theatre, watch a play, and then critique us. Your constructive feedback will be welcomed, but baseless negativity will not.”
