American motorists in Cleveland, Ohio, were met with two horses running free down Interstate 90, the longest highway in the United States.

The pair of horses temporarily slowed down traffic over the weekend after escaping the Cleveland police stables and making their way to the highway.

Surveillance videos posted online by the Ohio transportation department showed the pair of horses weaving through cars in oncoming traffic. The horses, which were followed by a police car with flashing lights, then turned towards a grassy area before disappearing out of sight.

“We can confirm that today during routine car and exercise, two Cleveland police horses inadvertently strayed,” police sergeant Wilfredo Diaz said. He went on to add, “Mounted officers promptly recovered both horses, ensuring their safety, and no further incidents ensued.”

In a caption on Twitter/X accompanying the surveillance videos, the Ohio transportation wrote: “Some real horsepower on I-90 in downtown Cleveland today. Any injuries? Neigh.”

The Cleveland mounted police team currently has eight horses and eight police officers, according to its website. Among the horses include Breeze, Chex, Jim, Larry, George, Mandy, Jack and Nimo.

The perpetrators of Saturday’s escape and joy ride have not been named. It remains unclear if they will be charged in the incident.–The Guardian
