Allegations of corruption in wheat import are baseless: Kakar

Former Interim Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar has said that Rs85 billion corruption allegations in wheat import are baseless, adding that the caretaker government has not allowed even the misuse of 85 paisa, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Talking to 24NewsHD TV channel about the wheat scandal, Kakar said the private sector does not need specific permission from the government to import wheat, some people were trying to create a storm in a cup of tea.
To a question, Karkar said he was available for interrogation when the cabinet committee will call him. He said if he failed to appear before the committee it would be tantamount to theft and embezzlement. He pledged that “If the committee calls, I will cooperate”.
The former PM said there should be minimal government intervention in wheat import and purchase issues. He claimed that TCP still faces a Rs297 billion deficit.
The former PM said some elements in the country were creating difficulties for the new government as an impression was being created that with the import of 3 million tonnes wheat, a new crisis had erupted in the country which is not true.
Kakar advised the government that surplus wheat stock can be exported to Afghanistan and other markets, moreover, flour can also be exported to Afghanistan.
Former PM said before the bumper crop, there was a shortage of wheat which was eliminated by the private sector.
He said the Punjab government will solve the farmers' protest issue in the province. He said if entire wheat is purchased by the government from the farmers, it will bring stability to the wheat and flour market.
Talking about the political situation, Kakar said sooner the PTI will realize that the parliament has come into being and the government is in place. Kakar said in politics, putting conditions on negotiations is not a democratic attitude.
To a question, the former PM said the visit of the Saudi delegation to Pakistan is a result of SIFC's performance, adding that SIFC is essential for the Pakistani economy. He said soon the economic benefits of SIFC will begin to be felt in people's lives.
