Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry has said that the FBR’s announcement to protect taxpayer data is welcome steps but the real test is its implementation.

LCCI Senior Executive Committee Member Ali Imran Asif urged FBR to establish a secure and robust system for data protection, which requires not only technical security measures but also an effective accountability system within the FBR and other relevant institutions.

He said if this decision is to be truly effective, it must be coupled with practical measures, including comprehensive training of officers, establishment of transparent audit systems, and continuous improvement of cybersecurity measures.

He said that declaring taxpayer data as critical infrastructure is not a comprehensive solution to any problem, but it is necessary to align data protection with emerging threats, and it is important that the government does not stop at this step alone.

Pakistan must promote a culture of cybersecurity awareness that extends not only to government institutions but also to the private sector.

He said the global cybercrime landscape is constantly changing and the state must be ready to adapt accordingly.
