Transparency International Pakistan has written a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighting the alleged regulatory shortcomings in the pharmaceutical sector, violations of the Drug Act 2012 and non-appointment of Federal Inspectors of Drugs (FIDs), and has demanded an investigation from the Prime Minister.

The letter sent by Transparency International to the Prime Minister, which is available to 24News, states that Transparency International Pakistan has expressed concern over the regulatory shortcomings in the pharmaceutical sector.

The text of the letter reveals violations of medical device rules, delays in approvals by manufacturers. According to the text, pharmaceutical companies are selling expensive medicines by creating artificial shortages.

Transparency International accused the federal government in the letter of not effectively monitoring the pharmaceutical industry. According to the text, new appointments of Federal Inspectors of Drugs could not be made in the last two and a half years.

According to the letter, only two federal inspectors are active across the country, the pharmaceutical sector is suffering from lack of supervision. More than 700 pharmaceutical license holders are operating without proper supervision.

According to the letter, there is a risk of unregulated and dangerous medical products entering the market and questions are being raised over the non-appointment of a permanent director despite the 2012 DRAP Act.

Transparency International Pakistan has demanded an investigation from the Prime Minister and has stressed the appointment of necessary federal inspectors and strict implementation of laws.
