FBR reinstates commissioners' power against tax defaulters

Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Monday reinstated powers of the commissioners to freeze bank accounts of the tax defaulters to recover dues.
According to the 24News HD TV channel, the requirement of prior approval from the FBR chairman has also been withdrawn for freezing the defaulters’ bank accounts.
The FBR also removed the requirement for the commissioners to notify the Chief Executive Officer, Principal Officer or Owner of the concerned taxpayer or company 24 hours before freezing the taxpayers' bank accounts.
The FBR issued letter to all field formations Commissioners directed to implement the law. Field formations and tax authorities have now been reinstated under Section 140 of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001.
