Recent data reveals a significant setback in the realm of Pak-Afghan bilateral trade, with sources reporting a substantial 43% year-on-year decline in September, reported 24NewsHD TV channel Wednesday.
The trade dynamics between the two nations witnessed a 9% reduction compared to August, marking a concerning trend in the economic ties.
According to sources, the exports to Afghanistan bore the brunt of this decline, experiencing a sharp 26% drop on an annual basis last month. On a monthly scale, the decrease stood at 14%, adding to the challenges faced by traders and businesses involved in cross-border commerce.
Imports from Afghanistan, too, faced a downturn, plunging by 55% on an annual basis in September. On a monthly comparison, the decline was noted at 3%, further exacerbating the strain on the trade relationship.
In terms of monetary figures, Pak-Afghan bilateral trade for the month of September dwindled to $122.7 million, marking a notable contraction. The export volume from Pakistan to Afghanistan during this period amounted to $65.7 million, reflecting the challenges faced by Pakistani businesses in maintaining their market presence across the border.
Concurrently, imports from Afghanistan to Pakistan during the same period were reported at $5.69 million, underlining a significant decrease in cross-border commercial activities.
The causes behind this notable decline in bilateral trade remain multifaceted, with economic experts speculating on factors such as geopolitical tensions, logistical challenges, and the broader economic climate.
