Govt drops petrol bomb after unprecedented increase in gas tariff

Caretaker federal government Thursday dropped petrol bomb after giving a go-ahead for an unprecedented increase in gas tariff, 24NewsHD TV channel reported.
The government hiked the petrol price by Rs2.73 per litre and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs8.37. The new price of petrol is Rs275.62 per litre and HSD Rs287.33 per litre.
According to a notification from the Finance Division, the government has decided to bring changes to the current prices of petroleum products during the fortnight starting from February 16 as recommended by the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra).
The notification did not mention any changes in the prices of kerosene oil and light diesel oil.

Earlier in the day, the federal cabinet decided to increase gas prices by 67 per cent as the government assured the IMF of issuing the gas price hike notification by February 15, sources said. They added the increase in gas prices will be applicable from February 1, 2024.
