Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar has said efforts are underway to reach a consensus between the government and opposition parties on constitutional amendments, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Speaking to the media outside parliament in Islamabad on Sunday, Tarar said that the ongoing consultations are causing delays but are essential for ensuring national progress.
He described this moment as a crucial turning point in Pakistan’s history, reflecting the commitments made under the Charter of Democracy to facilitate easy access to justice for all citizens.
Tarar stressed the government's focus on improving the country's justice system through the proposed amendments, which, according to him, will positively impact every Pakistani’s life.
The minister asserted that parliament holds the authority to amend the Constitution and laws, as granted by the people’s votes. “We must create legislation that benefits the public, as they have elected us to Parliament for this very purpose,” he added.
The information minister added that extensive and comprehensive consultations regarding these amendments are being conducted, with the aim of making significant progress as soon as possible.
He pledged that the media would be kept informed of all developments.
Tarar revealed that Maulana Fazlur Rehman is engaged in discussions with opposition parties, while the government is consulting with its own allies.
The ultimate goal, he affirmed, is to ensure the well-being and progress of the public through constitutional reforms.
According to Tarar, Maulana Fazlur Rehman is meticulously reviewing each clause with the opposition parties, ensuring that every word of the amendments is carefully scrutinized.
“Without a broad-based consultation, moving forward is difficult. All political parties have their constitutional experts involved, and consultations are ongoing to reach a consensus,” he elaborated.
He further clarified that until the consultations are finalized, the amendments cannot be presented in Parliament.
The minister expressed hope that progress would be made soon, emphasizing that the delay is a result of the broadening scope of the discussions.
“Maulana Fazlur Rehman continues to hold consultations with the opposition, and we remain committed to achieving consensus for the greater good of the nation,” Tarar added.
