Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar dismissed reports about an extension of the Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s tenure, calling them incorrect, 24NewsHD TV Channel reported on Thursday.
According to the TV channel, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar emphasised that ad hoc judges should be appointed as the constitution allows for such appointments.
The federal law minister also clarified that ad hoc judges are to be appointed by the Judicial Commission, not by the Chief Justice alone.
Azam Nazeer Tarar criticised the decision of the eight judges of the Supreme Court, who, according to him, rewrote the constitution in a case concerning reserved seats.
Additionally, Tarar hinted that the issue of applying Article 6 to the opposition party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, could be brought to Parliament for discussion.
The law minister suggested that there could be a debate in Parliament regarding applying Article 6 [to the three leaders of the PTI including Imran Khan, Dr Arif Alvi, and Qasim Suri].
He also commented on a recent Supreme Court decision, saying it provided an opportunity for one political party [PTI] to strengthen.
About imposing a ban on the opposition party, he said last year’s decision not to ban PTI was made to maintain the political environment.
