After three days of paralysis in cargo operations, talks between Karachi goods transporters and the Sindh government have finally succeeded, leading to the end of the ongoing strike on Saturday.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, work has resumed at Karachi Port, Port Qasim, and other terminals as cargo clearance, loading, and unloading activities are fully restored.

President of the Goods Transport Association, Tariq Gujar, confirmed in an interview with City21 that the government has accepted their demands and assured that impounded vehicles will be released.

Tariq Gujar said the primary demand was to allow time for vehicle upgradation, as immediate compliance for over 15,000 vehicles was not feasible.

The government has now agreed to a gradual upgradation plan, under which weekly reports of upgraded vehicles will be submitted to the authorities, he added.

The association president emphasised that both the transporters and the government want to reduce road accidents but added, “Fifty-year-old issues cannot be resolved in a single day.”

It is pertinent to mention here that Karachi has witnessed a rise in fatal accidents involving speeding heavy dumpers and trailers, which have sparked public outrage and protests by residents.

On April 13, a tragic accident near Bolton Market claimed the lives of two young motorcyclists when a speeding trailer collided with them.

The victims, 27-year-old Noor Aslam and 25-year-old Zahid, both residents of Lyari, died on the spot. Police arrested the driver and took the vehicle into custody.
