To curb the black market and ensure fair practices in the sale of fertilizers, Punjab Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman on Monday held a video conference with Deputy Commissioners across the province, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel.
The primary focus of the conference was the stern implementation of administrative measures to halt the unlawful sale of fertilizers.
The Chief Secretary directed Deputy Commissioners to establish a 24-hour helpline dedicated to preventing the illicit sale of urea fertilizer and maintaining its availability at government-fixed prices.
Furthermore, Chief Secretary Zaman instructed the district administration to ensure the active participation of all field staff, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts in controlling the smuggling and hoarding of fertilizers.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by the black market and hoarding, Chief Secretary Zaman asserted that a daily assessment of fertilizer prices and availability would be conducted to address the concerns of farmers.
He also emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards the creation of artificial shortages and vowed not to allow any exploitation of farmers by unscrupulous elements in the fertilizer trade.
The Chief Secretary informed the participants that in the past month alone, 76 cases related to fertilizer smuggling had been registered, leading to the apprehension of 36 individuals involved in illegal activities. Additionally, 17,800 bags of fertilizer were seized, and fines amounting to Rs 9 million were imposed.
