The PTI-led Punjab government has approved in principle the establishment of Health Insurance Authority to monitor the Universal Health Insurance programme, which has already been formally launched in 11 districts of the province and under which people will be provided free treatment even at private hospitals, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
The provincial government plans to spend over Rs400 billion on the programme by 2023 in order to ensure the provision of free treatment facilities to the people.
The officials of Department of Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education have said that the provincial government has already prepared the first draft of the Authority, which will keep an eye on the treatment expenditures borne by the patients, possessing health cards, at both government and private hospitals.
They have further said that Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Sardar Usman Buzdar will be its chairman while it will also have a board of directors (BoD).
The officials have informed that the draft of the Authority will soon be sent to the law department before seeking its approval from the provincial cabinet.
