Legendary film and TV actor Firdous Jamal on Tuesday spoke his heart out about his personal life, his struggle in the showbiz industry, his differences with his family and the reason why he left his house.
Speaking to Rehan Tariq on 24 Plus, Firdous Jamal responded to his son’s recent statement that his father mistreated his mother in his 40 years of married life and she lived a miserable life.
Responding to his son’s allegations, Firdous Jamal said he did everything he could do for his family. He said he paid for his children’s education, bought them a good house and provided them all facilities of life, including cars. However, he said, he is living in a rented house and he doesn’t even own a car. He said that he prays to God not to make him dependent on anyone until his death.
Recalling the time when he decided to move from Peshawar to Lahore, Firdous Jamal said he lived in a barn in Lahore’s Ichra neighborhood for Rs25 per month rent and slept on the ground. He said that he came to Lahore to become a superstar and he achieved it. He said the he has achieved everything and seen everything. He said that he has lived everywhere, from slums to palaces. He has spent time with the presidents and prime ministers of Pakistan and top landlords of this country. He said he has no regrets and God has been kind to him more than anyone else.
Narrating the story of his cancer treatment, Firdous Jamal said he went to Shaukat Khanum Hospital, but they refused to accept him. He said this disheartened him for the time being, but then he understood the logic behind Shaukat Khanum Hospital’s policy of refusing patients above 60. He said he agrees to the hospital’s policy because it is more important to provide treatment to someone who is 25 years old rather than the one who is 70 years old.
Answering a question about how he afforded his cancer treatment in 2021, Firdous Jamal admitted that the government had given him Rs10 million for his treatment and his treatment cost him Rs15 million. He said that his family was with him at the time of his cancer treatment socially, but not financially.
When Rehan said he wants him to be with his family at this point, Firdous Jamal said he too wants to be with his family, but with respect and dignity. However, he did not give a direct reply when the host said that Firdous Jamal became a liability for his family when he did not allow his daughter-in-law to join the showbiz industry.
When asked if his family expelled him from his house, Firdous Jamal said he was not expelled from his house; he himself left his house. Explaining the reason why he left his house, Firdous Jamal said that one of women of his family came back from the shooting of a drama and he asked where she has come from. He said he was told that she has come from the shooting of a drama. He asked his family members, did she get his permission before doing the drama? And he was told his permission was not required. He said that was the moment he decided to leave his house.
He said that one should not live at a place where he does not have respect. He said he does not want to see a woman of his family in the showbiz industry because he is already there. He said that he wants to be called an actor, and not a kanjar. He said he does not care if his remarks hurt the women working in the showbiz industry.
