Islamabad United skipper Shadab Khan has expressed firm support for teammate Azam Khan, addressing ongoing concerns over the wicketkeeper-batsman’s fitness.
During the post-match press conference following their victory over Karachi Kings in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10, Shadab emphasised that Azam’s on-field contributions to the franchise prevailed over any fitness-related issues.
“There shouldn’t be any questions about Azam’s fitness; we can cover for him,” said Shadab.
“I’m not saying he should necessarily be in the Pakistan team, but in our franchise, we provide him cover, and he always performs for us. Yes, fitness is important, but for us, his performance matters more.”
Azam Khan, who has often been at the center of debate for his fitness standards, was promoted to open the innings during a modest 129-run chase.
Partnering with Sahibzada Farhan, Azam provided a steady start with a composed 31 off 30 balls. Farhan added a brisk 30 off 18 deliveries, laying a solid foundation for the chase.
Shadab himself delivered a captain’s knock, scoring a crucial 47 off 40 deliveries to guide the team home comfortably.
