Former president and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday said that the struggle by late Begum Nusrat Bhutto, his mother-in-law and mother of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, for the restoration of constitution and democracy in the country was ‘historical’, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
In his message on the occasion of Begum Bhutto’s 10th death anniversary, he said that ‘Mother of Democracy’ created history by enduring hardships during her struggle for the achievement of her objectives. “Begum Nusrat Bhutto proved that a leader is one who has the patience and the courage to give sacrifice for the attainment of his or her goals,” Zardari commented.
The former president said that PPP not only had the history of giving sacrifices but also of developing the country. “Begum sahiba taught us to give sacrifice for the country, to face vicissitudes of life bravely, to show patience and tolerate dissent,” he said.
“The 18th Constitutional Amendment is a ‘democratic revenge’ from those who are opposed to the very notion of democracy,” Zardari said, adding that the amendment also guaranteed the country’s solidarity.
Today, he added, the country was facing hostile circumstances as people were facing inflation and unemployment. “The nation’s fate is being decided outside of the parliament,” he regretted.
Former president claimed that whenever the PPP came to power, it was on the basis of people’s support. “During the PPP’s rule, not only youth get jobs but the poor man also heaves a sigh of relief,” he said.
