LHC judge fumes over PDMA’s poor performance on water shortage, drought

A Lahore High Court (LHC) judge has expressed displeasure over the performance of Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on the issue of water shortage during hearing of a case related to smog prevention, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
During proceedings on Frida, the court sought reply from the PDMA director general on the drought issue.
Justice Shahid Karim remarked that if the court has to do everything, then the department should be wrapped up.
Justice Shahid Karim further remarked that the government should take steps and make a permanent policy for water conservation.
Tariff of commercial users should be increased to conserve water, Justice Shahid Karim remarked.
Lawyers from the federal, Punjab, environment department, LDA, PHA and LMC appeared in the court.
Member of the Environmental Commission read out the report on drought and groundwater conditions.
Cars are being washed from pipes due to which water is being wasted and government should make a policy to prevent water wastage, Justice Shahid Karim remarked.
What did PDMA do on the report of the Metrology Department? Where is the DG, PDMA, don't he know? Justice Shahid Karim inquired.
However, Director PDMA Hameedullah Malik could not give a satisfactory answer in the court.
If the court has to do everything, then close the PDMA, Justice Shahid Karim expressed anger.
School buses for children should be started from Aitchison College and 50 percent of children in Aitchison College should come on buses, court remarked.
Court further remarked that an officer should not have the authority to exempt a school.
Exemption from school buses should be in accordance with the law or policy, Justice Shahid Karim remarked.
Schools built in 10 marla and having less than 100 students can be exempted, court further remarked.
During hearing of the case, Wasa lawyer submitted a report regarding the installation of water meters.
Wasa lawyer submitted that installation of water meters will start with commercial consumers.
Lahore High Court adjourned further hearing of the case till next week.
