Apple is reportedly working on a game-changing upgrade for future Apple Watch models, potentially transforming the device into an AI-powered wearable with built-in cameras, according to Apple insider Mark Gurman.
While the 2025 Apple Watch lineup is expected to introduce blood pressure monitoring and minor design tweaks, Gurman claims Apple is exploring the addition of cameras to both the Series and Ultra models in future generations.
An AI-Driven Apple Watch?
The integration of cameras could pave the way for AI-powered visual context features, similar to the Humane AI Pin and Meta’s smart glasses. This would allow the Apple Watch to analyze surroundings, identify objects, and provide real-time information. Imagine pointing your wrist at a landmark and instantly receiving details about its history, architecture, and significance—all powered by AI.
Gurman suggests that Apple’s Visual Intelligence feature—which already uses AI to process photos on iPhones—could extend to the Apple Watch. Cameras and microphones onboard would enable enhanced Siri interactions, providing spoken responses through the watch’s speaker or AirPods rather than relying on its small display.
Possible Design Changes
In terms of hardware, Gurman states that:
Standard Apple Watch Series models may include a front-facing camera, similar to iPhones.
Apple Watch Ultra models could feature a side-mounted camera lens near the Digital Crown and Side Button for a more immersive AI-driven experience.
This could open the door for FaceTime on the Apple Watch, a feature Apple has long been rumored to be working on.
Still Years Away
While this development is exciting, don’t expect to take selfies from your wrist anytime soon—Gurman notes that these advancements are still several generations away. However, the concept aligns with Apple’s recent patent filings for an Apple Watch with a foldable screen and onboard camera, reinforcing the idea that AI-powered wearables could be a big part of Apple’s future.
