Former Bangladesh cricket captain Tamim Iqbal suffered a major heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match in Savar, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Monday.
The 36-year-old, who was leading Mohammedan Sporting Club against Shinepukur Cricket Club at BKSP, began experiencing chest discomfort while on the field. He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where his necessary tests were conducted due to his worsening condition.
According to the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) chief physician, Dr. Debashish Chowdhury, the cricketer underwent an ECG, which revealed irregularities. However, doctors were initially unsure about the full extent of his condition.
"He reported discomfort and was taken for a check-up. The first test showed some abnormalities, but heart conditions can be tricky to diagnose immediately. He felt uneasy and requested to return to Dhaka," Dr. Chowdhury explained.
Doctors performed an angiogram and angioplasty, successfully inserting a stent to clear a blockage in his heart.
Providing an update on his health, the hospital’s medical director, Dr. Rajib, stated, "The procedure was completed successfully, and by the grace of Allah, his condition is stable."
"Tamim suffered a heart attack, but the blockage in his artery has been cleared. The operation went smoothly, and he is now under observation," he further added.
The news of Tamim’s health scare has sent shockwaves through the cricketing community. Several BCB directors have traveled to Savar, leading to the postponement of Monday’s scheduled board meeting.
Tamim Iqbal, one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers, retired from international cricket in 2023 but remained active in domestic competitions.
