The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) Thursday approved the imposition of an additional surcharge of Rs 1.52 per unit on the consumers of K-Electric, the sole power distributor in Karachi.

According to 24NewsHD TV channel, the surcharge was approved at the request of the federal government and will be applicable from December 2023 to November 2024.

According to NEPRA, the additional surcharge will burden the K-Electric customers by more than Rs 24.50 billion in one year.

The federal government will issue a final notification of the levy of surcharge after receiving the decision from NEPRA. The increase will not be applicable to Lifeline customers of K-Electric, who consume up to 50 units per month.
