At least 11 people died and another 617 sustained serious injuries in road accidents across Punjab in 24 hours, Rescue 1122 reported on Monday, when Lahore Chief Traffic Office Hammad Abid distributed helmets to motorcyclists in a bid to create awareness about road safety.

The emergency service reported 67 per cent of accidents took place due to violation of traffic laws by motorcyclists while underage drivers were also affected.

A total of 236 accident calls were received in Lahore, followed by Faisalabad (81) and Multan (66), it said, adding that 195 women were among the victims.

Abid handed over helmets to motorcyclists and appealed to them to abide by traffic laws for the sake of their own lives, a handout said.
