The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) claimed to have found sugar cartel’s involvement in betting and other such activities.

The agency said it has evidence of almost all the major groups of Pakistan dealing in sugar businesses.

The FIA found clues about their corrupt practices from 32 cell phones and laptops.  It was also revealed that the sugar mafia would also conspire to further increase sugar prices through gambling in Ramazan.

The FIA will dig into the matter of members of the sugar gambling mafia, and then arrest them after registration of cases under the Anti-Money Laundering Act. For this purpose, the FIA Lahore formed 20 teams, which would launch a crackdown on the mafia. 

The sugar cartel’s moneymaking spree has been going unabated for years. This year, , the commodity cost has been increased from Rs70 to Rs90. The cartel has fake accounts to conceal Rs110 billion public and hiding it in secret accounts.

The gang of organized criminals hoarded the commodity to create an artificial shortage that increases its demand, the insiders said.

Last year, Prime Minister Imran Khan promised that the government will not allow the sugar cartel to tamper with prices.
