The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has announced a major overhaul of its postgraduate clinical programs, introducing a competency-based curriculum aimed at modernizing medical education, reported 24 NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday. 

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting of UHS’s Specialty Advisory Committees, chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore.

Under the new framework, all MD, MS, MDS, and postgraduate diploma programs will be redesigned to focus on skill-based training, ensuring that students acquire modern medical competencies.

Essential clinical skills will be embedded in the curriculum from the outset, enhancing the professional training of postgraduate students.

Prof. Rathore directed that the immediate modernization of 60 postgraduate programs, which include 48 master’s degrees and 12 diploma programs.

He emphasized the need to align training with global medical standards, equipping students with advanced clinical expertise.

 Additionally, specialized clinical skills workshops will be introduced to further strengthen hands-on training for residents.

To improve supervision and accountability, postgraduate residency programs will now be tracked via the UHS online portal.

Supervisors will be required to submit quarterly progress reports through institutional heads, ensuring continuous monitoring and assessment of residents’ performance.

This reform is expected to enhance the quality of postgraduate medical education in Pakistan, producing highly skilled healthcare professionals equipped to meet the evolving demands of modern medicine.
