In a recent decision emphasising consumer rights in Lahore, the consumer court came down heavily on a foam company after a customer reported severe dissatisfaction with a purchased mattress.
Ambrin Yusuf, a resident of Lahore Cantt, who sought a good night's sleep and instead found herself in distress due to the product's poor quality, took the matter to court after the company failed to honour the warranty, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Hoping for peaceful slumbers, Ms Yusuf purchased the mattress from a local foam company based in Gulberg, Lahore. However, her expectations were dashed when the product did not live up to its promised quality. Adding to her woes, when she approached the company citing the warranty and demanding a replacement, her requests were summarily ignored.
Feeling aggrieved and left with no other option, Ms Yusuf filed a claim in the consumer court, seeking damages to the tune of Rs400,000. The court, after reviewing the case and evidence provided, sided with Ms Yusuf.
The presiding judge issued a order against the company, directing them not only to refund the full cost of the mattress but also to pay an additional Rs20,000 as compensation for the mental anguish she endured.
This verdict underscores the crucial importance of consumer rights and serves as a reminder for businesses about their obligations to customers. A warranty, often used as a selling point, must be more than just a piece of paper; it should be a commitment to quality assurance and customer satisfaction.
The foam company’s failure to uphold this commitment has resulted in legal repercussions and has shed light on the broader issues of consumer rights and business accountability.
