Nepra slaps Rs230 million fine on Gepco

National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has imposed Rs230 million fine on Gujranwala Electric Power Company (GEPCO) while rejecting its response to a show-cause notice, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.


During hearing of the case, the NEPRA directed GEPCO to pay Rs4 million as compensation to heirs of six families of deceased persons died from electrocution due to Gepco’s poor performance.


NEPRA further directed that one member of each victim’s family should be provided job. NEPRA directed GEPCO to deposit the amount of fine in any nominated bank within 15 days.


It is necessary to mention here that in years 2022-23 nine persons were died in different areas located in GEPCO jurisdiction due to electrocution.


Dead persons include six citizens and 3 GEPCO employees.


NEPRA initiated inquiry against GEPCO on August 30, 2023 and also issued show-cause notice in this regard.
