London mayor Sadiq Khan honored with knighthood in king’s new year list

Sadiq Khan, the son of Pakistani immigrants and the current Mayor of London, has been awarded a knighthood in King Charles’s New Year honors list.

The recognition celebrates his remarkable contributions to public service and his transformative leadership in one of the world’s most vibrant cities.

Khan announced the honor on social media, expressing gratitude and disbelief. “Truly humbled to have received a knighthood in the King’s New Year’s Honours,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “I couldn’t have dreamed when growing up on a council estate in south London that I’d one day be Mayor of London. It’s the honor of my life to serve the city I love.”

Khan’s journey to public service is an inspiring tale of determination and perseverance. Growing up as one of eight siblings in a working-class family on a council estate in south London, he learned the values of hard work and resilience from his parents—his father, a bus driver, and his mother, a seamstress.

A trained lawyer, Khan entered politics through the Labour Party, steadily rising to become London’s first Muslim mayor in 2016. Despite facing criticism over issues such as crime rates and housing shortages, he has been re-elected three times, demonstrating the trust and support of Londoners.

The King’s New Year honors list this year acknowledges over 1,200 individuals across diverse fields, including politics, sports, arts, and community service. Other notable honorees include former England soccer manager Gareth Southgate and Paris Olympics gold medalist Keely Hodgkinson, who also received knighthoods.
