Finance Minister says national economy ready to take off via ‘Uran Programme’: Ahsan Iqbal says it’s a revolutionary step

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched the Uran Pakistan, a homegrown five-year National Economic Transformation plan in Islamabad on Tuesday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel. 

Addressing the inauguration ceremony in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif lauded the officials and officers of Finance Ministry, Ministry of Planning and Development, Cabinet members and other departments for launching the Economic Transformation plan. 

The five-year plan aims to address key economic challenges thro­ugh a targeted framework called the “Five Es” — Exports; E-Pakis­tan; Equity and Empo­werment; Environment, Food and Water Security; and Energy and Infrastructure.

On the occasion, PM Shehbaz Sharif said when PML-N and its Allies took charge of the government during 2023, economy was on the verge of collapse. PM Shehbaz said the coalition partners decided that they will compromise their politics for national interests and face the outcome. He said PML-N preferred the protection of state over politic. He said when government was trying to bag IMF deal, some element wrote letter to IMF that programme should not be given to the government. During 2024, inflation had touched 38 percent and interest rate was 22 percent. Forex reserves were limited and all other factors were very weak. 

He thanked God now inflation has come down to 5 percent and interest rate has come down to 13 percent and it can be reduced further by central bank. Talking about the causes of IMF loan, PM Shehbaz said state owned enterprises suffered 6 trillion losses during the last decade. The electricity cost is 4 trillion but we sell it in Rs2 trillion. 

He told the nation that we have to change the course. He urged the unity and hard work to the nation. He said in the past Pakistan suffered global isolation. He said this is high time, the government has started reforms in all sectors. He urged the nation to learn from the past and move on. 

PM Shehbaz said that government has achieved micro economic stability and government has to make headway in growth. He lauded the team work of federal government, provincial government, Ministry of Finance, Army Chief and SIFC for the growth measures. 

PM Shehbaz said that government will continue its right sizing policy in all government departments. He said that government will promote solar power.  He also urged Finance Ministry to cut taxes on various essential items. 

Muhammad Aurangzeb

Commenting on the economic plan in his televised remarks, Finance Minister Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb said it is aimed at steering the country toward sustainable growth from the current macroeconomic stability.

Describing it as a momentous occasion, the finance minister stated that one of the key pillars of the plan is to achieve export-led growth in order to avoid boom-and-bust cycles in the economy. He emphasized that the private sector will have to play a lead role in this regard.

The minister expressed commitment to completing the structural reforms process, emphasizing that the government is also working diligently to reduce its expenditures.

He expressed confidence that Uran Pakistan will take the country to a place in the next two to three years, making the current IMF programme the last one.

The finance minister said today is an important day in history of our country as Pakistan’s economy is ready to take off through 5-year “Uran Programme”

Ahsan Iqbal

Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal said that whenever Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) came into power they adopt effective measures to bring the economy on the track.

He further said that after assuming the power, they once again were trying to make Pakistan an independent economic state and implementing Uran Pakistan programme to achieve it.

Ahsan Iqbal said that nowadays Pakistan is in dire need of economic march instead of political march.

Ahsan Iqbal also mentioned that the government took necessary steps to address the economic challenges. He expressed confidence that this five-year plan will provide a strong foundation for economic development, and its benefits will reach the common man in the form of better employment, healthcare, education and business opportunities.

Describing it as a revolutionary step, he said the success hinges on the entire nation working collectively toward it.

He stressed on promotion of exports, e-commerce, human resource development, technological advancement, modernization of agriculture sector and energy efficient system for attaining sustainable development goals.

Ahsan Iqbal also underlined the importance of peace, political stability and continuity of policies for durable progress in the country.

Attaullah Tarar  

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar said that “Uran Pakistan” project will pave way for economic prosperity of our country.

Attaullah Tarar said the prime minister’s homegrown economic reforms package will significantly improve citizens’ lives, stimulate growth, and strengthen the economy.

In an exclusive statement regarding the prime minister’s five-year National Economic Transformational Plan 2024-29, titled “Uran Pakistan: Homegrown National Economic Plan,” Tarar revealed that PM Shehbaz Sharif will unveil the ambitious agenda today.

He stated that Pakistan has moved from the verge of default to stability and is now on the path to progress. He expressed gratitude, highlighting improvements in all economic indicators.

Describing the homegrown economic agenda as a reform-driven plan centred on “Made in Pakistan”, Tarar stressed its vital role in fostering economic growth and bringing positive change to the people of Pakistan. 

The economic reform agenda is designed to accelerate the country’s development and ensure the prosperity of its citizens, he added.

Tarar said this is an all-inclusive agenda through which the journey of economic development will be undertaken. He said this economic reforms agenda is for the development of Pakistan and its people.

Ali Pervaiz Malik

Minister of State for Finance, Revenue and Power Ali Pervaiz Malik said that political instability was the main reason behind economic instability. He said that Uran Programme will pave way for economic stability.

Ali Pervaiz said the five-year economic plan will permanently set the country's economic direction on the right path. He was confident that Pakistan will emerge as a sovereign economic power on the world map as a result of this plan.

Senator Talal Caudhary said that political instability always created hurdles for economic stability and prosperity of our country.

PML-N MNA from Islamabad Tariq Fazal Chaudhary said that they will convert Pakistan into an Asian tiger in near future.

Tariq Fazal Chaudhary said the plan will bring prosperity to the lives of the people and help attract investments. He said the plan envisages a promising future for our youth.
