The government has completed preparations to increase the electricity tariff by Rs6.79 per unit following the Power Division officials’ meeting with a delegation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
Quoting its sources, the channel reported that power rates would be increased during the next five months phase by phase.
They further said that the Power Division officials briefed the Fund about the plan they had drawn up under which the circular debt would be reduced with the gradual hike in the electricity rates, by preventing incidents of power theft and line losses.
Furthermore, the sources told the channel, there was a suggestion to increase the electricity price by Rs4.46 in the current month under the quarterly adjustment, while in March, it would be increased by 69 paisa.
Similarly, in June, they disclosed, the proposal was to raise the tariff by Rs1.64 paisa.
The officials of the Power Division also briefed the visitors about the reforms the government was introducing in the energy sector.
