The Punjab government has decided to outsource 971 round-the-clock Basic Health Units (BHUs) across the province, converting them into 'Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics.'
This move is part of the government’s plan to expand healthcare services through public-private partnerships.
According to official reports, in the first phase, 150 BHUs have already been renamed Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics and placed under private management.
The second phase will expand this initiative to all 24/7 operational BHUs, totaling 971 across Punjab.
Moreover, 11 general Basic Health Units have also been allocated for the program.
According to the government’s plan, private doctors will be hired to manage these centers, and the Punjab government will provide a monthly payment of PKR 600,000 per unit to ensure efficient operations.
Lahore is among the key cities where this transformation is taking place, with BHUs in Dograi Kalan, Hadiara, Maraka, Manhala, and Pandoki being among the centers assigned for conversion into Maryam Nawaz Health Clinics.
Every basic facility will be available in the state-of-the-art and clean hospitals on the pattern of top private clinics. The entire system from entry to treatment stage in ‘Maryam Nawaz Health Clinic’, will be digital. The Chief Minister distributed contract letters of ‘Maryam Nawaz Health Clinic’ project to the doctors.
The initiative is aimed at enhancing healthcare accessibility in Punjab, especially in remote areas, by leveraging private sector expertise.
However, the move has also raised concerns among some stakeholders regarding the privatization of public health services.
