The Supreme Court (SC) has been approached against the amendments to National and Database Registration Authority (Nadra) rules for the appointment of the authority chief.

A citizen, Awaisur Rehman, filed a petition in the top court stating that the changes made in the rules for posting Nadra chairman should be declared illegal and unconstitutional.

After the publication of an advertisement for the appointment of the chairman of Nadra, the amendment by the government should be declared null and void as this shows that the government wants to ‘benefit a particular individual’, the petitioner maintained.

The federal government should be ordered to complete the process of appointment of the authority head as per the law, he stressed, adding that until the final decision of the case, the federal government should be restrained from appointing any candidate.

Appointments in state institutions directly affect the fundamental rights of the people and the posting of Nadra chairman is being done in a very suspicious manner, he said, adding that he federal government failed to appoint Chairman Nadra within 60 days during its tenure

The petition said issuing the interview notice on the last day of the term of the federal government is a violation of the constitution and Nadra  chairman cannot engage in any other service, business, profession or employment during his term of office,
