Ryan Rickelton finished the day unbeaten on 176 runs, while captain Temba Bavuma also scored a century, helping South Africa reach 316-4 at the close of play on the first day of the second Test against Pakistan at Newlands on Friday.

Bavuma fell prey to Salman Ali Agha in the dying minutes of the first day after playing a brilliant knock of 106 runs from 179 deliveries with the help of nine fours and two sixes.

Rickelton, who scored 176 off 232 balls, will resume the play on the second day with David Bedingham (4*).

Bavuma and Rickelton joined hands after lunch to build a substantial 235-run partnership, which lasted throughout the second session and most of the third before Salman ended their collaboration.

Earlier, South Africa lost their third wicket at the stroke of Lunch as Salman Ali Agha dismissed Tristan Stubbs (0) to leave the hosts reeling at 72-3. Rickelton will resume his innings on 50 after Lunch.

The hosts got off to a solid start after opting to bat first as in-form Aiden Markram and Rickelton stitched a 61-run opening stand.
