The Punjab government has begun preparations to celebrate a safe and regulated Basant festival in Lahore in February 2026, sources told the 24NewsHD TV channel.
As per the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, a high-level committee has been formed to chalk out a strategy for the event.
The committee includes officials from the Walled City Authority, the commissioner and deputy commissioner of Lahore, and the CCPO of Lahore, as well as representatives from various departments and members of the Kite Flying Association.
Sources revealed that authorities are considering hosting the Basant festival in the Walled City area and celebrating it over two designated days.
The plan also includes a proposal to ban motorcycles for two days during the event to prevent accidents and ensure safety.
Only district administration-registered vendors will be allowed to sell and buy kites, while those making kite string (dor) will also need prior registration with authorities.
Moreover, the district administration will set specific guidelines regarding the materials used in kite string manufacturing. Use of glass-coated or metallic string will be strictly prohibited.
All strings will be subject to official inspection and will only be approved if they comply with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
