Over the issue of a violent altercation between female passengers and Customs officials yesterday, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) took notice of the incident and issued a statement clarifying that every agency at the airport operates within its own jurisdiction.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the PAA spokesperson said in a statement issued on Tuesday that an explanation has been sought from the relevant department to better understand the incident and to ensure the safety and order of airport operations.
The spokesperson reaffirmed the authority’s commitment to providing a safe and organised environment for all passengers at Pakistani airports.
It is noteworthy that a violent altercation erupted at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport between customs officials and three female passengers arriving from Abu Dhabi, leading to chaos in the arrival area and the launch of a criminal investigation.
The dispute began when customs officials stopped the women, all dressed in burqas, over the clearance of bridal lehengas and other undeclared items. The confrontation quickly escalated when the women resisted, triggering a scuffle that turned physical. Eyewitnesses reported slapping, hair-pulling, and even shoes being thrown during the clash.
Sources confirmed that a female passenger slapped a customs officer, prompting retaliation from customs staff, including a female officer who was seen pulling a passenger by the hair. One of the passengers allegedly struck officials with her shoe, while another reportedly issued death threats and snatched confiscated goods from an officer’s custody, later handing them over to unknown individuals.
Customs authorities revealed that the three women attempted to smuggle 24 security cameras and around 40 kilograms of high-value clothing. The goods were being brought in on flight number 854 from Abu Dhabi.
Following the incident, a case has been registered at Sarwar Road Police Station under charges of smuggling, interference in official duties, issuing criminal threats, and vandalism.
