On the demand of the teachers, the Higher Education Department of Punjab on Monday abolished the autonomy of 18 colleges in the province.
According to the 24News HD TV channel, now the said colleges will get funds like other public colleges from the government.
The channel report said in 2000, colleges in various districts including Lahore had been declared autonomous and their funds were frozen.
After getting autonomous status, these 18 colleges were also directed to generate their own funds to run the institutes.
For this purpose, autonomous colleges had increased the tuition fees and other charges of study in the institutions.
But now, in light of the decision of the cabinet, the notification of the abolition of the autonomy of 18 autonomous colleges has been issued.
