Renowned Saraiki folk singer and recipient of the Presidential Award, Pathanay Khan, is being remembered today on his 25th death anniversary.

With a career spanning decades, he earned 80 national and regional awards for his mesmerising renditions of Sufi poetry, reported on the 24NewsHD TV channel on Sunday.

A life dedicated to music, mysticism

Born Ghulam Muhammad in 1926 in Kot Addu, Punjab, Pathanay Khan dedicated his life to singing Kafis and Ghazals, inspired by the poetry of Bulleh Shah, Khwaja Ghulam Farid, Pir Meher Ali Shah, and Shah Hussain. His devotion to Sufi mysticism was reflected in his deep, soul-stirring voice.

A journey of struggles, spiritual devotion

From an early age, he faced hardships—his father remarried, leading his mother to raise him alone. It was a Syed family that suggested changing his name to Pathanay Khan, believing it would spiritually uplift him. His early teacher, Baba Mir Khan, guided him in music, and despite financial struggles, he pursued his passion with unwavering devotion.

A voice that moved generations

In 1976, then-Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto invited him for a private performance. Pathanay Khan’s rendition of "Jindarri lutti tain yaar sajan, Kadi mor maharan tay wal a watan" brought Bhutto to tears. When asked if he had any wishes, Pathanay Khan simply replied, "Bhutto Sahib, aap ko gharib awaam ki parat ho" (Take care of the poor, Bhutto Sahib)."

Legacy and influence

His distinctive singing style continues to inspire musicians and Sufi music lovers worldwide. Even 25 years after his passing, his voice, poetry, and spiritual wisdom remain immortal in the hearts of his fans.

A legend remembered, a voice that echoes through time.
