The Maldivian government, under the directive of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has declared an extended public holiday for Eid al-Fitr, granting citizens a week-long break to celebrate the festive occasion with their families.
According to an official statement from the President’s Office, if the Islamic Ministry announces Shawwal 1 on March 31, 2025, government holidays will extend from March 31 to April 3.
However, if Eid falls on March 30, public holidays would have started on March 30, 31, and April 1—but President Muizzu has ensured that the break will last until April 3, regardless of the Eid date.
This means government offices will remain closed until April 5, reopening on April 6, 2025. Since April 4 and 5 fall on a Friday and Saturday (the Maldives’ regular weekend), citizens will enjoy an uninterrupted holiday period for Eid celebrations.
In addition to the Eid holidays, President Muizzu has extended the government closure from March 20 onwards for the final 10 days of Ramadan. This move aligns with his policy of promoting Islamic practices and allowing citizens to focus on religious observance during the holiest days of the month.
Despite the extended break, essential government services will remain operational, ensuring that crucial functions continue without disruption.
This decision reflects the government’s commitment to supporting both religious devotion and family time, offering the people of Maldives a longer, more meaningful Eid holiday experience.
