In an astonishing incident at Lahore, a policeman was caught on camera brutally assaulting a waiter, allegedly over not being provided breakfast for free. The video footage, which has since gone viral, has ignited public outrage and condemnation, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
As per the CCTV footage from the roadside restaurant (locally known as Dhaba) in Firdous Market Chowk, policeman Zulfiqar was seen grabbing the waiter by the collar and violently thrashing him over the breakfast dispute. The intensity of the cop's reaction shocked the onlookers and fellow employees at the Dhaba.
Not satisfied with the assault in the Dhaba, the cop further dragged the young waiter to the Firdous Market checkpoint, where it was alleged that the torture continued.
Dhaba workers claimed that Firdous Market Chowk police often send slips to demand complimentary meals. The incident raises serious concerns about abuse of power and raises questions about how widespread such practices might be.
As the footage surfaced and rapidly spread on social media, local authorities were quick to respond. The police officials, recognising the gravity of the situation, immediately suspended Zulfiqar pending further investigation.
The move, though appreciated by many, has also led to calls for stricter oversight of police behaviour and increased accountability.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of checks and balances within the police force and the potential for misuse of power, even over seemingly trivial matters.
