The deputy attorney general has sought time to file comments of the federal government in the petition of journalism organisations against the PECA Amendment Act in the Sindh High Court, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Wednesday.
The federal government did not submit comments in the case. However, the court adjourned the hearing of the petition to May 7.
The petition has been filed by National Communications Services, the Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors, the Council of Pakistan Newspaper Editors, the Pakistan Broadcasters Association, the All Pakistan Newspapers Society, and others.
The petition has been filed through former Attorney General Munir A. Malik Advocate.
It was submitted in the petition that the PECA Amendment Act is a forced censorship of journalistic duties and a violation of fundamental constitutional rights.
The amended PECA Act deprives the constitutional right to freedom of expression, the text of the petition said.
The plaintiffs requested the court that the section of the PECA Amendment Act should be declared null and void.
