A female bear at Islamabad Zoo is sick with a breast tumour, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.

Islamabad Wildlife Board Scientific Committee Chairman ZB Mirza broke the news and said delaying tactics are being used regarding the sickness of the wild sow. However, he said the female bear is being sent abroad for treatment.

To a question, Mirza said “The vet dodged their queries when they asked him about the animal’s disease. No one volunteered to help the bear.”

He further said that if the tumour has not developed into cancer then it can be removed through surgery. “Qualified vets should look into it,” he added.

Mirza said they have two brown bears and the sick female bear will be sent to Jordan for treatment. “It is an insult for us to send the animal abroad for treatment. Vets in doctors said they will send the sow back after treatment,” he said and asked “Are our qualified officers are just there for getting their grades improved.

Islamabad Zoo of lately is a subject of many news especially about the Kaavan elephant, which was dubbed the ‘World’s Loneliest Elephant’ by his supporters. The animal activists of the region came to rescue the elephant and arranged a new campaign to dwell.

Kaavan, an elephant, lived isolated for more than 35 years in the Islamabad Zoo. It lost its partner in 2012, and the zoo where it lived was being locked due to improper performance.

Martin Bauer, a spokesman for advocacy community Four Paws, took the medical examination and permitted the elephant to travel to Cambodia after given the medical approval. The medical examination results indicated the elephant had gone overweight and showed some whiff of malnutrition, he said.
