Eye doctor booked over alleged negligence in surgical procedure

Karachi police have  registered a case against an eye specialist following allegations of negligence during a surgical procedure, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel on Tuesday.

The case was filed by Sindh Deputy Prosecutor General Faheem Hussain, who claimed his eyes were adversely affected due to the doctor's alleged negligence during a surgical procedure.

Dr. Azam, an eye surgeon affiliated with hospitals on Stadium Road and Shaheed Millat Road, was named as the primary subject of the case. Faheem Hussain stated that Dr. Azam diagnosed cataracts in both of his eyes and recommended immediate surgery.

The Deputy Prosecutor General initially agreed to pay Rs 251,000 for the cataract surgery, which took place at a private hospital on Shaheed Millat Road after a week.

Due to severe pain and the unavailability of Dr. Azam, Faheem Hussain was referred to another private hospital on Stadium Road.

Upon examination, Dr. Azam suggested that one of his eyes required a repeat operation.

 

At Dr. Azam's insistence, Faheem Hussain paid an additional sum of Rs 83,000 for the eye re-operation. However, when he returned to the hospital for a follow-up, Faheem Hussain alleged that Dr. Azam threatened him and refused further treatment.

The Deputy Prosecutor General sought medical attention at a third hospital, where it was discovered that a contact lens had fallen onto the eye screen during the initial operation. His other eye had developed a severe infection, leading to partial blindness.

Despite the registration of a case, East Police have not yet act against Dr. Azam Ali, who has not obtained pre-arrest bail.
